I encourage you to watch the documentary as well.

**Tentative Due Date**

Dear Class,

This is a very difficult topic; not only to learn about but to teach. You do not have to be related to a survivor or a victim to experience sadness, anger, outrage, or any other myriad of emotions from trying to understand how something so horrific happened not so long ago in our collective human history. The idea that there are deniers of both events is despicable, and yet there are people who do. This is why it is so important to never forget. I visited Dachau in winter 2002- there were no words, but I am glad that it was still standing to be a testament of what we should never allow to happen again.

Your assignment: (= 2 quiz grades) YOU CAN WORK BY YOURSELF OR IN A GROUP (UP TO 5 PEOPLE- TURN 1 COMPLETED ASSIGNMENT IN PER GROUP)
1. Read the power point. If possible, I recommend reading it with a family member or friend so that way you are not alone.
2. Answer the following questions using evidence from the power point, at least 3 of the documents in the attached primary source handout, (and optionally) the attached videos:
a) What was the Holocaust? How did the Holocaust happen? *Describe a few key events
b) What was the Rape of Nanking? How did the Rape of Nanking happen? *Describe a few key events
c) Were the Nuremberg Trials and International Military Tribunals justice? Explain.
d) Could the Holocaust and Rape of Nanking have been prevented? Explain.
e) Why do you think Holocaust and Rape of Nanking deniers exist? What would you say to them?

Extra Credit: Go to https://sfi.usc.edu/ (= 1 quiz extra credit) The extra credit must be done by yourself

Go to the Shoah Project (link below)
Choose any video from the perspective of a Holocaust survivor. Briefly describe the survivors story AND your reaction to it. You may use another source, as long as its primary (an interview or autobiography).

Globalization is the process, originating after World War II, by which nations of the world are being drawn into a global economic system based on free trade.

Is there truly a global culture? Is there no place left without a MacDonald's or Starbucks? Is globalization a good thing or are nations in danger of losing their own sense of identity and self-determination?

**You can work in a group of up to 5 people as there are a lot of questions. But then again, it's a big globe!**

2. Answer ALL of the Summary questions at the end of the power point- at least several sentences for each. Use historical evidence from the power point, the textbook, and/or the videos in your answers.

By yourself or in a group of up to 5 people, you will answer the following question: "Is increasing global trade a force for positive or negative change?" = 5 quiz grades (or half an exam)

Format: This is entirely your choice! You can simply write it in an essay format, film a debate, or even create a children's story. If you have another idea for a different format just let me know.

How Long? Ah. The question teachers dread. Whatever format you use, make sure you make at least 4 specific arguments to justify your position, AND explain at least 2 arguments of the other side. All arguments should be explained in depth.

If in essay format, I would suggest a minimum of 2 typed pages Times New Roman double spaced size 11 font.

If filmed as a debate or in debate written format, make sure you include the minimum of 4 arguments in depth, but for BOTH sides. At the end, come to a conclusion and explain how you got there.

If in a children's book, you will still need at least 4 specific arguments justifying your position, and 2 on the other side. It will just be in a "story" mode. With pictures :)

Requirements: You must include evidence from at least 2 sources. Cite all sources. (Absolutely you can use the power point, but that does not "count" as a required source).
I am attaching some suggestions for both the pro and con side.
