Music Department Course Offerings Fall 2015




Jazz Band (UJN11) (one year course)
Walter Birkhold, Music Coordinator/ Instructor
Course Summary- The Forest Hills High School Jazz Band is one of the premier performing ensembles in the school. Besides the usual Winter and Spring Concerts, the Jazz Band plays graduation and other functions both inside and outside the building. In the past, the jazz band has performed on the plaza at Lincoln Center as well as in Colden Auditorium at Queens College as part of a jazz residency program. We are building strong musicians through performance of legitimate Big Band repertoire.
Pre-requisite: Intermediate Band (UDN32) or department permission

Symphonic Concert Band(UDN33) (one year course)
Mr. J. Arzberger, Director
Course Summary: The Forest Hills Symphonic Concert Band is one of the premier performing ensembles in the school. At the minimum, the group will participate in two seasonal concert (winter and spring), which encompass numerous day and evening performances. In the past, this group has performed for various community events. The Symphonic Concert Band frequently collaborates with other ensembles within the department to perform large-scale works.
Entrance Requirements: Pre-requisite: Intermediate Band (UDN32), audition and/or instructor’s approval.

Symphonic Orchestra (UZN33) (one year course)
Mr. W.Chen, Director
Course Summary- Students will improve their instrumental technique while rehearsing legitimate orchestral music in preparation for a Spring and Winter concert.
Pre-requisite: Intermediate Strings (UZN32) or department permission
Advanced Percussion Ensemble (UNN22) (one year course)
Teacher: Mr. Jeffrey Arzberger
Course Summary: The Forest Hills H.S. Advanced Percussion Ensemble is one of the premier performing ensembles in the school. At the minimum, the group will participate in two seasonal concerts (winter and spring), which encompasses several day and evening performances. The ensemble serves as the percussion section to the Symphonic Concert Band. However, they also perform their own repertoire.
Entrance requirements- pre-requisite: Beginning Percussion (UNN21), audition and/or instructor’s approval.

Intermediate Band (UDN32) (one year course)
Ryan King- Instructor
Course summary: The Forest Hills H.S. Intermediate Band gives the moderately experienced student the opportunity to continue improving on their instrument. This course also teaches the student how to read music. The desired result of this course is a well prepared student ready to be placed in the upper level performing ensembles if he/she chooses.
Pre-requisite: Beginning Band (UDN31) or department permission

Intermediate Strings (UZN32) (one year course)
Mr. W. Chen- Instructor
Course summary: Intermediate strings combines method book and technique study with mid- level performance repertoire. The desired result of this course is a well prepared student ready to be placed in the upper level performing ensembles if he/she chooses.

Concert Choir (UVN33) (one year course)
Mr. Koch- Instructor
Course Summary: The Forest Hills H.S. Concert Choir is the most advanced vocal group in the school. They perform legitimate chorus music for many events including our Spring and Winter Concerts.
It is my sincere privilege to welcome you and your child into the choral program at Forest Hills High School. Whether you are a new or a returning member, it is vital that you understand the caliber and expectation of the organization of which you are a part. Participation in an outstanding music ensemble can be one of the most fulfilling experiences of your life. I expect the students and ensembles here at Forest Hills to be outstanding. There is no secret to success. It requires your time, your dedication and your discipline. With these things, we can and will accomplish anything.
Pre-requisite: Vocal Training (UVN32) or Women’s Choir (UVN31) or department permission

Beginner Band (UDN31) (one year course)
Instructor: Mr. Terence Goss
Course summary: The Forest Hills H.S. Beginner Band gives the inexperienced student an opportunity to learn an instrument (such as flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone and French horn) and become performance ready. This course also teaches the student how to read music. The desired result of this course is having a well prepared student ready to be placed in the upper level performing ensembles if he/she chooses.
***No Experience Necessary, anyone can join.***

Beginning Strings (UZN31) (one year course)
Mr. W. Chen- Instructor
Course summary: Beginning string class offers high school students an opportunity to learn an orchestral string instrument from scratch. The student may choose Violin, Viola, Cello, or Doublebass. Students will be taught to read music notation as well as develop good technique for continued study on their instrument.
***No Experience Required, anyone can join.***

Beginner Percussion (UNN21) (one year course)
Instructor: Mr. Arzberger
Course Summary: The Forest Hills H.S. Beginner Percussion class gives the inexperienced student the opportunity to learn a percussion instrument and become performance ready. Students play everyday using their sticks and practice pad. The beginner percussion class is a one year course with its desired result being a well-prepared student for Advanced Percussion Ensemble.
***NO Experience Required, anyone can join.***

Women’s Chorus (UVN32) (one year course)
Instructor: Mr. Koch
Course summary: The Forest Hills H.S. Women’s Chorus is for ladies that have taken vocal training but are not quite ready to move on to Concert Choir. Students that have taken vocal training may automatically be enrolled.

Vocal Training (UVN31) (one year course)
Instructor: Mr. Koch
Course summary: Vocal training gives the inexperienced singer an opportunity to learn proper vocal technique. Students will be taught to read musical notation.
***NO Experience Necessary, anyone can join.***
