Elective Courses

Required Courses of Study

 9th Grade/ Freshmen Global Studies I

This course, which is required for graduation, begins students on a chronological study of world history, beginning with the basic foundations of the study of history and geography, including the use of secondary and primary resources.  The course moves from pre-history to the emergence of great civilizations, including the Greek, Roman, Gupta, Byzantine and Han Empires as well as the empires of Mesoamerica and Africa.  They examine the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Age of Exploration and the rise of absolutism around the globe.                                     FULL YEAR, CORE REQUIREMENT, 2 CREDITS

 

Sophomore/ 10th Grade Global Studies II

This course, which is required for graduation, continues the study of world history, moving from the Scientific Revolution to today.  It includes focus on the Enlightenment, revolution and industrialization, a study of the world wars, the rise of communism and the Cold War and the post-colonial world.  Students discuss contemporary issues and develop the content and reading and writing skills they will need as they prepare for the Global History and Geography Regents, which is required for graduation.

Junior/ 11th Grade American History

This course, which is required for graduation, takes the student on a survey of American History and government, from the foundations of our nation through the present.  Topics covered include our colonial roots, the establishment of the government foreign policy, the growth of US and federal power, the Civil War and Reconstruction, industrialization, immigration, WWI and WWII, the Great Depression, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, and change in America.  It also includes a focus on current issues. This course terminates in the United States and Government Regents, which is required for graduation.

 Senior/ 12th Participation in Government (if US History is done, some may take as a Junior)

This course, which is required for graduation, explores the foundations and workings of our federal, state and local governments, focusing on Constitutional principles.  Students examine the Constitution itself as well as the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court and state and local government.  Students are challenges to develop analytical, higher order critical thinking skills.   There is a 15 hour community service requirement for all students in this course AND they must complete a senior thesis research paper.  ONE SEMESTER, CORE REQUIREMENT, 1 CREDIT

 

Senior/ 12th  Economics (if US History is done, some may take as a Junior)

This course, which is required for graduation, helps students develop and understanding of the inner workings and theories behind our economic system.  It is designed to have the students gain the financial literacy that will assist them throughout life.  Students in the course will take the WISE Financial Literacy exam.     ONE SEMESTER, CORE REQUIREMENT, 1 CREDIT


Law Academy: Law and Humanities

Students in the Law Academies at Forest Hills High School take part in a four year course of study that takes them from an introduction to law and legal writing through a study of civil and criminal law as well as constitutional law. Students in both programs have the opportunity to take part in internships with New York law firms, the Queens District Attorney Office and benefit from partnerships with NYU, Fordham Law and Hughes, Hubbard and Reed. Each year, the students participate in Moot Court and Mock Trial, demonstrating the skills they have developed in the program. Students also produce a Law Journal and participate in the Forest Hills Youth Court, a program run in conjunction with Queens Borough Patrol North and the District Attorney’s office. The Law and Humanities program is an Ed-op program.

Academy of Public Service
Students in the Academy combine a study of public policy and government with active involvement in the community. They complete a challenging three year course of study, which includes Global and US History, English and special electives, including Facing History and Issues in Public Policy. Students work on research projects that are designed to apply what they have learned. In addition to their course work, students in APS are dedicated to making a difference in the community and take an active role in shaping and participating in volunteer activities. For example, they have run the school’s food drive, tutored in after school programs, participated in Project Cicero and painted over graffiti. They have held internships at the Queens Borough President’s Office, among others, and participate in the Forest Hills Youth Court. Applications for the program are taken from freshmen.

We the People: Advanced Placement Government and Politics (HFN11XQL)
Members of the Advanced Placement Government class take part in the We the People competition, sponsored by the Center for Civic Education, which challenges the students to become expert in the Constitution, from its foundation, philosophy and current issues under debate. Students compete at City and State championships, demonstrating their expertise in a speech and answer a series of probing questions from rotating groups of judges. In 2011, Forest Hills placed second in New York State.

Electives

Legal Reading, Writing and Research (HLN41T)

This course is designed to introduce legal vocabulary and concepts.  Students will research cases and current events in law and critically engage with the material, discussing ideas and developing a basic understanding of the legal system.  They will also explore law through literature and performance based activities.

 

Beginning Law (HLN42T)

This course is designed to help students develop a basic foundation in law. The student will gain a greater knowledge the different types of laws and an understanding of both the Federal and State court systems.                                                                                    FULL YEAR, Elective 2 CREDITS

 

Constitutional Law (HLN43T)

This is a comprehensive course in Constitutional law. This course is designed to develop critical thinking skills through the study of U.S. Supreme Court decisions. The student will develop a greater understanding of the U.S. Bill of Rights and how the U.S. Supreme Court has interpreted the Constitution through case law. The students will work on Moot Court cases to develop a greater understanding of the impact of these decisions on American society.              FULL YEAR, Elective 2 CREDITS

 

Contemporary Legal Issues (HLN44T))

This course addresses important legal issues of the day. The students develop their legal research skills by dissecting and arguing issues that are currently under debate throughout the United States, on local state and federal levels. Students compete in both the New York City Moot Court competition, as well as the New York State Mock Trial Competition. These competitions give the students the ability to demonstrate their expertise in law, public speaking and critical thinking.

Criminal Justice (HRN11)

In this course, students will engage in a study of Criminology, Law Enforcement, Crime and the Justice system, examining the rules and values that shape our society. Students will meet several guest speakers, including representatives from the NYPD, Emergency Service Officers, Court Officers and Fire Marshalls, among others, and will go on trips in conjunction with their studies.

Facing History (HQS21HPS)

Facing History and Ourselves uses the Holocaust as a case study to discuss issues such as tolerance, racism and responsibility. In this class we use many forms of technology such as videos, internet research, literature, poetry, and art for students to portray the issues we discuss in class. The students ask tough questions of themselves and society. Students learn to be open minded and willing to express their views with their classmates.

Issues in Public Policy (HQN22HPS)

This course is part of the Academy of Public Service and is the culminating elective in the sequence. Students study public policy, how it is developed and how to evaluate program success and make necessary changes. As part of the course, students work on Social Science research papers, which are submitted to the WISE Quality of Life research competition. The students must become experts in a quality of life problem, completing thorough secondary and primary research in order to build a case for change. They must design, implement and analyze their own field study of the problem and develop a unique, feasible solution. Students are challenged to think critically and debate and discuss issues of the day.

The mission of this course is to empower students with the skills necessary to promote unity achievement and safety in schools. This gives the students a chance to be part of a group with a meaningful purpose that they themselves help to define.

Human Geography of NYC (HPN11)

New York City is at the crossroads of the world. We can see it, hear it, smell it, feel it. We are unique in our diversity of culture, language cuisine, music, ethnicity and religion. This gives us a unique opportunity to study the people that live here, and lived here. In this elective course you will become both a visitor to and an exhibit in the living museum of NYC. You will explore questions such as: Why did your family choose your neighborhood in Queens to settle in? Where do different ethnic groups cluster in NYC?   Will the internet cause English to be the only language spoken in the future? Students will also examine these topics on field trips through the neighborhoods of NYC.

Women’s History (HSN11QGU)

Students in two elective class will examine women’s role in shaping world and U.S. History.  They will examine themes, events and people who have impacted our world.

Anthropology

Students will explore the history of the discipline of cultural anthropology, and its roots in the history of the broader discipline of anthropology. We will also examine the accomplishments and criticisms of the most renowned cultural anthropologists.  Students will explore what culture is, how we learn culture, and how we convey it and will examine the origins and purpose of taboos, and evaluate if they still serve a purpose today.  Students will examine topics like religion, culture, kinship and sexuality, looking for similarities and differences, especially ones leading to conflict.

Advanced Placement Courses

Advanced Placement Courses – are given to motivated students who seek the challenges of a rigorous work load, added responsibility, and college-style assessments.  All students in an Advanced Placement class must sit for the AP Exam in May.  Students who are successful on the exam may receive college credits.  The following classes may be taken in place of the traditional core class for that specific level.  Students must have a strong academic record in Social Studies and English.

 

Advanced Placement World History (HGN22X)

This course takes the students on an in-depth study of world history from Pre-history to current issues plaguing the contemporary world. Some topics of particular focus are the rise of primary innovative civilizations, the rise and fall of great empires through the classical, post-classical and early modern eras, the dawn of the Industrial Age and the 20th century through today. Eligible students are selected and registered for this course in lieu of Global Studies II. Students participating in the class are required to take the Advance Placement World History exam in May, which can lead to college credit. FULL YEAR, 2 CREDITS – in place of Global 2

 

Advanced Placement United States History (HUN11X)

This is a one year course of study that asks the students to analyze historical documents and materials covering early American history through current times. Topics covered include the colonial era, foundations of the nations, the Civil War, industrialization and immigration, reform movements, foreign policy and the expansion of rights. Eligible students are selected and registered for this course in lieu of American History.  If a student has already taken American History, they can take AP American as an elective.  Students enrolled in the course are required to take the Advanced Placement American History exam, which can lead to college credit.   FULL YEAR, 2 CREDITS – in place of US History & Government

 

Advanced Placement United States Government and Politics (HFN11X)

This course is designed to help students learn about the philosophical and practical foundations of the Constitution and how the government functions today. Students examine the changes that have occurred in government power and structure over the course of US History, and analyze and assess contemporary issues. Eligible students are selected and registered for this course in lieu of Participation in Government. Students enrolled in the course are required to take the Advanced Placement American Government exam, which can lead to college credit. FULL YEAR, 2 CREDITS – in place of Senior Year social studies

Advanced Placement Psychology (HBN11X)

This college level elective course examines the biological and environmental causes of human behavior. Advanced Placement Macroeconomics (HQN11XQE)

Students in Advanced Placement Macroeconomics will study the role of inflation and unemployment on growth and GDP. Students will develop and use their logic and analytical skills throughout the course. Special attention is given to economic policy. Students enrolled in the course are required to take the Advanced Placement Macroeconomics exam, which can lead to college credit.
